Guardians of Sarhua: Painting Stories Across Generations

An exclusive interview with the Sarhua community on preserving their wooden narrative boards, designated National Cultural Heritage.

Guardians of Sarhua: Painting Stories Across Generations

High in the province of Víctor Fajardo, the mountain community of Sarhua honors a deep communal pact: whenever newlyweds raise the roof of their home, their godparents gift them an elongated wooden beam painted with their family history.

Resting prominently beneath the rafters, these boards chronicle patron saints, ancestors’ trades, harvest ceremonies, and local celebrations. They are simultaneously a genealogy, a spiritual blessing, and a public archive.

In Sarhua, every painted ceiling beam tells the story of the family under its roof; to paint is to remember who we are.

Today, Sarhua master artists employ bird quills alongside fine sable brushes, mixing earth pigments and tree bark dyes to ensure younger generations carry forward their ancestors’ visual voice.
