Crucifixion Retablo with Ornate Purple Pedestal
This version presents the Crucifixion inside an open-winged case, with a figure on each side of Christ, carved flowers and a gilded crest of curling foliage. The integrated pedestal extends the composition and gives it a more sculptural, stable silhouette than the open version in the series. Peru's Ministry of Culture recognizes the knowledge, techniques and iconography of the Ayacucho retablo and its continuing life as a tradition.
